From Thousands in Debt to £100 in Credit!

Three appointments. Years of avoidance & worry resolved. One very emotional moment.

When an elderly couple were referred to The CoHub by one of our community partners, they were facing substantial rent and Council Tax arrears, mounting anxiety and the fear of what might happen next.

Following a serious deterioration in the husband's health, which left him paralysed and reliant on a wheelchair, the couple had been forced to move into more suitable accommodation. But somewhere during that transition, things had gone terribly wrong.

Confusing paperwork, changes in housing circumstances and language barriers had left them struggling to understand their financial position. Letters continued arriving, debts appeared to grow, and neither knew quite where to turn.

But there was one thing they had done brilliantly - they had kept every single letter!

When they arrived at our Information, Advice & Guidance (IAG) service, they brought years of correspondence with them. Our team began the painstaking process of reviewing the paperwork, identifying discrepancies, contacting the relevant departments and establishing what the couple should actually have been paying.

Over three appointments, we worked through their housing and Council Tax issues, challenged the outstanding balances and secured the appropriate Council Tax Reduction entitlement.

And then came the moment we'll never forget.

Not only had their outstanding arrears been cleared, but their account was actually £100 in credit!

When we explained the outcome, the wife burst into tears. After months of worry, confusion and uncertainty, the relief was overwhelming. For this couple, the outcome was about far more than money. It meant peace of mind, financial security and the confidence that they could finally settle into their home without the constant fear of debt hanging over them.

Their story demonstrates why accessible, patient and culturally sensitive advice services matter. Language barriers, disability and complicated systems should never prevent people from accessing the support and entitlements they deserve.

Sometimes changing someone's life doesn't require a huge intervention. It takes time, patience, the right knowledge and someone willing to sit down and work through the paperwork together.
