From financial exclusion to independence - rebuilding access, identity and control
Phil's Story
Phil came to the CoHub quietly, after being referred by one of working partners. What followed was something much bigger.
For over 15 years, Phil had been completely financially excluded. After a marriage breakdown, he lost access to his accounts, identification, and most of the systems many of us take for granted. Returning home later in life to care for his parents, he never rebuilt those foundations. Without ID, he couldn’t open a bank account, access benefits, or re-enter the system in any meaningful way. Day to day, he relied on his mum to manage bills and provide money when needed.
When Phil came to us through the IAG Help Hub, he wasn’t looking for a big intervention - just a bit of guidance. But what he needed was a full reset.
Over a series of appointments, we worked alongside Phil step by step:
-
Securing the right identification
-
Opening his first bank account in years
-
Supporting him to access the benefits he was entitled to
-
Rebuilding his confidence in navigating systems independently
It wasn’t quick, and it wasn’t simple - but it was consistent, practical support that made the difference.
Today, Phil is no longer financially isolated. He has control over his own money, access to services, and the confidence to move forward independently.
A quiet win, but such a powerful one.
